In the key of blue Cabernet Franc
Deep dark fruits, balanced oak and tannins. This wine is a delight and is helping support local theatre.
In 2017, playwright and Dramatic Arts teacher Mike Trites decided he would fulfill a lifelong
dream of writing a storyline that went along with the lyrics of his favourite rock group Blue
Rodeo. The play became a pastime for him as pandemic isolation sat us all at home. But after
casually mentioning the project to a neighbour who just happened to be a first cousin of Jim
Cuddy (one of Blue Rodeo’s front men), the project now had both meaning and a destination.
In 2023 the script had undergone 2 read-throughs and would undergo several sets of
workshops. A band was formed for the purpose of lending support to the project. This band
later realized they wanted to see the project through to its conclusion. After securing the
licensing from Blue Rodeo’s record label and management company in early 2025, Mike already
had on board a set of Producers ( radio personality Pat Larkin and author Tom Harrison). The
support swelled. Local choreography auditions were held. The band was knee deep into
rehearsals of new arrangements of old Blue Rodeo classics. To date, 59 members of the “In the
Key of Blue” collective are from the County. The show is coming together every day, as the
production team strives to put together funding. The show opens on July 3rd 2026 and runs
for four days in Picton’s historic Regent Theatre. For the last six shows, the troupe is touring
both Kingston and Peterborough.
And here’s where PEC businesses can help this local groundswell.
“In the Key of Blue” needs
community partnerships. If businesses speak of our show, then we sell tickets. If 59 members
of the troupe speak of the local businesses, their sales will benefit.
“In the Key of Blue” is proud
to announce a partnership with Cape Vineyards who have dedicated their Cabernet Franc to the
run of the show. Such a complex, high quality wine is not only a good culinary pairing, but also
a great match with a show that hopes to meet the standards of this wine. We hope you enjoy
this wine, and by doing so, you are helping foster local theatre.
